Technology Changing the Restaurant Industry

Technology is changing everything. Since about 2002 when the internet began to grow beyond its britches, every single niche that could be affected by technology has been affected by technology. The restaurant industry has been affected as well, and it’s only going to keep changing as new technology is utilized for faster operations, better customer experience, and new and improved services.

Most of us are familiar with going to our favorite eatery, sitting down, meeting our waitress, and ordering off of a traditional laminated menu. For most restaurants, this is still the norm, as not everyone has adopted new technologies. But even in traditional restaurants, much is slowly changing.

Take how you pay for example. It’s slowly becoming the norm that how you pay and where you pay will be much different than before. Point-of-sale (POS) technology allows patrons to pay at the table and go. You’ve probably seen standing tablets that not only allow you to pay but also order, play video games, and print your receipt. This is changing the way we experience dining, as you can now go into some restaurants, seat yourself, order your food, and pay without much interaction with the wait staff. For some this is idea and if your restaurant is going into the morderin age of tech for restaurants you can read more on new tech.

Think about how you order online as well. Long gone are the days of paper menus or opening the phone book to find pizza or Chinese delivery. Nowadays there are several apps that will allow you to order any food imaginable from local restaurants. You simply place your order, and the app does the rest. Your food is delivered within the hour from wherever you want, so you are no longer limited to Italian and Asian cuisine. Imagine what this will look like once fewer and fewer patrons visit restaurants and instead order online when they’re craving restaurant fare.

When you order online or even when you want to go out to eat, most of us are starting to search the internet first before making a decision. This is changing the way restaurants are doing business, as they have to compete with each other not only locally but online as well. They must advertise more, post their menus online, and make sure customer experience is the best due to dozens of online review sites that keep restaurants in check. Business can thrive or fail by word-of-mouth, and today, online recommendations are the bread and butter of a lot of restaurants.

Technology is allowing for a lot of automation as well. More and more, restaurants are using proprietary computer software to automate not only food delivery but food preparation. Have you visited a fast food restaurant lately? Not only are the menus digital, but the ordering system is digitally automated. Cashiers and chefs simply follow on-screen tasks to take and fulfill orders. This eliminates guesswork and ensures consistency. For many restaurants, this also ensures better employees, as training is limited to a certain number of tasks that are easy to evaluate and control.

Inventory can also be controlled in many restaurants, leading to better estimation of expenses and a better business model overall. By tracking food sales, current inventory, and historical predictors using algorithms, restauranteurs can better predict (or allow computers to predict) what needs to be ordered and when. The process can even be automated, keeping restaurants stocked without risking human error that could lead to product shortages or overages.

Overall, embracing technology is a personal choice, but as time goes by, many of these advancements are going to become industry standards, and the way restaurants do things going forward is going to be vastly different from the way things have been done in the past.
