Buying presents for teenagers is not an easy thing. They are going through that phase where they are no longer children, but they aren’t quite adults, they are finding out who they are, they are testing boundaries and they are creating their own identity in the world.
It all means that present buying can be tricky and there is a risk of wasting your money on something that is going to be deemed puerile, uncool or stupid.
That is a risk that you are going to have to negotiate, but it is also worth noting that there are some items that could be considered safer than others. Here are a few items that you might want to consider.
Something for their phone
The one thing that we all know about teenagers is that they seem to be permanently glued to their mobile device. If they are not messaging their friends, then they are playing games or watching videos. But the truth is a teenager and their phone are never far apart. In short, their phone is very much part of their identity.
From the brand they chose to the cover, the screen saver and the content that is on the phone, it defines that teenager and makes them a part of one group or another. So, look to buy something like a stylish or trendy iPhone XS max case that makes a statement. It is the one place where you almost can’t go wrong.
Money
Because teenagers are very focussed on building their own identity and doing the thing that they want to do, the gift of money is not a bad option. It is a gift that allows them to purchase whatever they want and to spend it when or where they choose. They can save it or blow it or put it towards something big and fancy, but the ball is in their court. And they almost always will have an idea of where they want to spend it and what they want to spend it on.
Movies
Who doesn’t like a trip to the movies, either with mates or with that special person that you are crushing on? Unfortunately for most people however a visit to the cinema is quite costly. The tickets are expensive and then there is all the other stuff that goes with it.
So, get a movie voucher for your teenager that will allow them to have some fun and to see something cool with a person or persons of their choice. Having watched the latest release on opening weekend is something of a status symbol, and you can help to make that a reality for your person.
Experiences
Being a teenager is all about discovering yourself and broadening your horizons, pushing the limits and finding out what works for you and what doesn’t. So, help with this by gifting your teen some sort of experience.
It could be zip-lining or bungee jumping or surfing lessons, horse ridingor gadget. Ideally, you know them well enough to know the sort of experience that will excite them. Play to that and give them the chance to find something that they can make their own.
