And Why You Shouldn’t

So, you’ve started a blog, just like an estimated 200 million before you. You don’t want to waste your time writing a blog that no one is going to see, so what are you going to do to stand out? Are you going to do the exact same thing that everyone else is doing? That’s unique…

Google has lost count (it probably hasn’t) of the number of blogs that have been started by someone who believes the world needs to hear their story, only to be parked just a few months later.

Excuses

The excuses are endless, but they usually revolve around:

“I just don’t have the time”

“I don’t have anything to write about”

“I lost interest”

“Nobody was reading my blog”

Poor excuses, which are usually the result of a lack of planning – let’s analyse the above:

“I just don’t have the time”

Unless your situation changes, you should know how much time you have in a week that you can spend on your blog. To keep a blog relevant you should average at least one post every week, so even if you can only spend an hour or so over the course of seven days, that is enough to keep your blog updated with new content.

“I don’t have anything to write about”

This has to be the worst excuse of those listed. Any blogger that claims they have nothing to write about simply is not trying hard enough or is not as much of an expert in what it is they are blogging about as they would like to think. Create a content strategy and plan what topics you are going to cover over a set number of weeks and months. Failing this, read what other bloggers are writing about as a source of inspiration.

“I lost interest”

You began your blog because you held such a passion for your subject area that you felt that you needed to write about it for others to read, and you just lost interest? Ask yourself the question what it is you lost interest in, the area you are writing about or blogging itself? If it’s your subject, then write about something else, if it’s blogging then you are doing it wrong (more on this later).

“Nobody was reading my blog”

Did you even try marketing your blog? Not even shared a single post on social media? Well, how else do you think an audience would find your blog? By directly searching for johnskitchencounter.wordpress.com? You’re better than that.

Keep Motivated

When you start a blog, you’re not going to see thousands of visitors overnight. It takes a lot of patience and even more work. As mentioned above, you shouldn’t need much more than an hour a week to be able to keep your blog updated with at least one weekly post. Never underestimate the power of content.

If you feel as though you are becoming disinterested in your blog, then how do you think your readers are feeling? Try something different to keep your page fresh by creating graphics for your blog and social media pages instead of relying on heavy text-based content. Places such as Doppler Graphics are perfect for bloggers that aren’t quite as creative in Photoshop as they are in Word.

Take a fresh approach to your blog and social media accounts, because if you can barely be bothered to write then why should readers take the time to come to your blog?

Run Events

Sometimes you can feel as though you are blogging for blogging’s sake without any real end goal to work towards. So why not organise an event that you can blog about? This will give you something unique to blog about and will help to promote you as a brand, thus gaining more authority in your field.

There are various ways in which you can use your blog and/or social media accounts to promote an event and, when done correctly, you could make a tidy profit through your event. Many bloggers have run their own events, making the most of the popularity of their website, whether they are actual physical events or virtual events (such as competitions, giveaways etc…).

Hopefully, after reading this, you feel re-energised and inspired to log back into your blog and jump back on the horse. If you are bored with what you are doing, then it is time for a change!

So, you’ve started a blog, just like an estimated 200 million before you.
